At LVS we practice “A Feet First Approach to Whole Horse Health.”
Dr. Lisa’s farrier background combined with veterinary training helps her treat the whole horse from toe to tail! Collaborating with hoof care professional Kris Warner allows LVS to help horses with many types of hoof conditions.
Musculoskeletal pain and performance problems are top non-emergency reasons horses see veterinarians. Back pain, laminitis, and navicular are frequent complaints. Other common problems include chronic conditions such as Cushing’s disease, respiratory disease, and digestive disturbances. At LVS we treat these conditions plus a whole lot more. We use safe, non-invasive treatments to help your horse heal from trauma or disease.
Does your horse have unbalanced feet, laminitis, navicular, ringbone, sidebone, hoof wall defects or any other foot problems? Do you have questions about the best diagnostic tools to evaluate your horse’s feet? Are you buying a new horse and want the feet evaluated? We can help! At LVS, we take a feet first approach to whole horse health.
Services:
- Trimming services for laminitis or other hoof diseases
- Hoof health evaluations for pre-purchase exams
- Trimming or shoeing consultations with your farrier
- Consultation on X-rays taken by your primary care veterinarian
In the case of laminitis or other hoof problem that involves systemic disease, Kris and Lisa work together to establish the best hoof care plan for your horse. Kris will take over for the routine maintenance once there are no longer medical concerns. If you are having a pre-purchase exam done, Lisa can consult with you on the hoof xrays. She can also conduct a hoof physical exam (but LVS does not provide full service pre-purchase exams).
Laboratory Tests
Want to simplify your deworming program? We can help you take the guesswork out of deworming. We start with a manure sample to identify horses with a high parasite burden or resistance to current deworming medication. We help you customize your deworming program. Most owners end up saving money because the majority of horses do not need frequent deworming!
Want to know if your overweight or laminitic horse might benefit from medication or diet changes? There are laboratory tests to help in the diagnosis and treatment plan for these horses. If your horse is overweight despite being kept on a diet, or if your horse has unexplained laminitis, he may have hormonal problems. There are various diseases that involve hormonal abnormalities. Two common ones include Cushing’s and metabolic syndrome. At LVS we take a particular interest in horses with these problems.
We can also draw blood for a routine screen that includes Complete Blood Count and Chemistry. These tests are to check for anemia, infection, inflammation or other internal conditions.
Want to simplify your horse’s feeding program? We can help you cut out unnecessary supplements and feed only what your horse needs. We test your hay or pasture to identify specific nutrients that match your horse’s needs. We have the hay probe tools to collect the sample, and pre-paid envelopes to mail the sample to the lab. Once the analysis is complete, we help you formulate a custom diet. You save money and your horse gets healthier. It’s that easy!
You can read about hay analysis and other nutritional information on the Equi-analytical laboratories website found here.
